- Apr 13 : Ambai turns out to be a tone language (at least I am betting Marian Klamer that it is, for a bottle of wine) with a trochaic stress pattern. Tonal faithfulness dominates foot structure - Apr 6 : Read about Crete today and I Want To Decipher Linear A ! So I am going to Crete :-). In August - Apr 5 : Kazutaka Kurisu (The Phonology of Morpheme Realization) has reviewed Voicing in Japanese (co-edited with Kensuke Nanjo [St. Andrew's, Osaka] and Tetsuo Nishihara [Miyagi, Sendai]) for the journal Phonology - Apr 5 : For the OT class, I hope Sara will write about her native language Ambai, Chang about Dutch, Francis about Limbum, Erwin about Chechen and Man about Hunan Chinese - Apr 1 : I got invited to Korea by Sang Jik Rhee, who is now Head of the Linguistics Department at Chungnam National University. For July - Mar 29 : Reviewed a paper for the Linguistics in the Netherlands 2007 volume - Mar 18 : Is Babel a film with a linguistic point? See link, link and link. This film is about the inability to communicate, because of language barriers or emotional barriers. Consider, for instance, the point about 'untranslatability' (which also came up in Oumou Diaby's talk at March 16's LUCL's presentations about translating terms for diseases from Dioula into French). Since the meaning of every word in a language is partly determined by the culture of the people who use it, a perfect correspondence between one term in a one language and a translation of that term is never possible (something is always Lost in Translation). But note that even within a single language (if such a concept exists at all) the meaning of a word that I use may be different, by the same reasoning, from the meaning of the same word used by my neighbour, because the culture that we share is only partly the same. Isn't it terrible to think that 'perfect communication' is never ever possible? Or should we say that the fact that we seem to communicate successfully in spite of this proves the point wrong? - Mar 15 : Anna Samata will not write her MA on Cretan Greek phonology but she will do an M.Phil thesis on aphasia instead - Mar 14 : Reading a paper on the Chechen language by Erwin Komen of SIL for Leiden Working Papers - Mar 13 : I got invited to present a paper at Shenzhen University at the end of April. China, here I come! - Mar 11 : Stefano Canalis is a visiting PhD student in Leiden from Padova. His interest is vowel harmony in Italian dialects and syllable structure of Albanian - Mar 8 : Martin Krämer's talk on hidden variation in the Sound Circle in Amsterdam - Mar 7 : Na Liu is writing her MA on IELTS testing. Harry is giving a talk on modality at the DGfS meeting in Siegen - Feb 17 : Finally laid my hands on Anybody Out There this morning (at 7 am) at Schiphol Airport. - Feb 16 : René Kager gives his inaugural address at Utrecht University about the acquisition of phonological rules - Feb 15 : Small party for Marc van Oostendorp who has become Professor by special appointment, financed by LUF. Plus: a small Chinese New Year's celebration - Jan/Feb : I have to finish editing a book (co-edited with Erik Jan van der Torre) on Voicing in Dutch, to be published by Benjamins - Feb 11 : I read Kathy Rys's (University of Ghent) dissertation on second dialect acquisition - Feb 8 : Today is the "birthday" of Leiden University. 432 years old (and no classes after 1 pm!) - Feb 7 : Curt Rice's talk "Metrical anatomy" in the Sound Circle here in Leiden - Feb 5 : Semester starts. I teach OT at LUCL on Thursdays
