- Mar 18 : Is Babel a film with a
linguistic point? See link, link and link. This film is about the inability to communicate, because of language barriers or emotional barriers. Consider, for instance, the point about 'untranslatability' (which also came up in Oumou Diaby's talk at March 16's LUCL's presentations about translating terms for diseases from Dioula into French). Since the meaning of every word in a language is partly determined by the culture of the people who use it, a perfect correspondence between one term in a one language and a translation of that term is never possible (something is always Lost in Translation). But note that even within a single language (if such a concept exists at all) the meaning of a word that I use may be different, by the same reasoning, from the meaning of the same word used by my neighbour, because the culture that we share is only partly the same. Isn't it terrible to think that 'perfect communication' is never ever possible? Or should we say that the fact that we seem to communicate successfully in spite of this proves the point wrong?
